Cover letter and Resume Contest

In collaboration with the Graduate School and Duke Career Center  CIERD is currently planning a cove r letter and resume contest for graduate students.  The purpose of this event is to help students with evaluation of career related materials by experts inside and outside student's discipline.  On a broader scale this project is a professional development experience, that will help students apply for jobs in academia or industry after graduation.  Participants will also benefit from the anonymous peer-to-peer review.

Similar event was not organized at Duke before, that is why we are excited to start the contest this fall. Since it is a new event we plan to launch its pilot version by limiting the event to engineering and science graduate students. Further we will collect feedback and will make this event for students in other disciplines. Reviewers for this contest will be experts among Duke faculty, Duke alums, Duke HR specialists and Career Center counselors. We anticipate that each reviewer will read 2-3 cover letters or resumes (each written for a specific job description). Then they will fill out an evaluation checklist as well as write any additional comments. Based on reviewers' evaluations we will identify the best two or three students.  All contest materials will be evaluated anonymously using our online form.

If you would like to get involved in planning of this event or if you have any questions or suggestions please email av12@duke.edu
