From the beginning of the 2005 spring semester, CIERD organizes sessions to discuss new trends in science, brainstorm and develop new ideas related to interdisciplinary education and research. The first objective of discussion sessions is to foster interaction and intellectual exchange between students from various departments and programs. The second objective is to find faculty support to help develop students' ideas into valuable research. The third objective is to explore opportunities associated with rapidly developing research fields. (Read more) If you are attending one of the interdisciplinary discussion sessions please ask for a free T-shirt. We may still have several T-shirts left. To download handout materials you will need to enter your Duke NetID and a password

Please visit our Grant Writing Project. Next Grant writing Workshop will be on April 5th at 3PM in Bryan Center Von Canon C. This workshop will be followed by a recepetion at 4:40 PM

Upcoming Event: Graduate Students Research Seminar- "Analog Circuit Design for Active Microcantilever Signal Amplification" (Abstract)

  • When: Thur., April. 14th, 12:00 PM
  • Where: Teer Building 203

Interdisciplinary Research Challenges

- Facing complex & unstructured research problems?
- Looking for new ideas and resources to improve your research?
- Want to get feedback from students outside your department?

-If so, join the next research discussion session where we will talk about challenges involved in interdisciplinary research, brainstorm hot research topics, explore opportunities for collaborations and engage in intellectual exchange with students across duke departments and programs.

  • When: Tue., March. 29th, 3:50 PM
  • Where: Bryan Center Von Canon C

Free Food and refreshements will be provided

In addition we will have a limited number of FREE T-shirts and Mugs provided to us by InnoCentive - an iinovative Web-based community matching top scientists to relevant research challenges. Sounds exciting? Then join us at the research discussion.

This Week: Improve Your Research With Statistics Link to the Flyer (in PDF, in HTML)
Handouts: 'What is Bayesian statistics and why everything else is wrong'

• Statistics & Interdisciplinary Research
• Bayesian Statistics: Principles & Application
• Intellectual Exchange & Faculty Feedback

  • When: Mon., April. 4th, 3:50 PM
  • Where: Bryan Center Von Canon A

Invited Faculty: Michael Lavine, Professor, Institute of Statistics & Decision
Sciences (ISDS) and Nicholas School of Environment, Scott Schmidler, Professor, ISDS, Jerry Reiter, Professor, ISDS
Starting around 1989, new computing algorithms, and more computing power, have enabled statisticians to solve problems radically more complex than before. Many of the new algorithms are especially useful in Bayesian statistics, which consequently has become both more powerful and more common. Invited faculty will begin by explaining what Bayesian statistics is, then let the discussion be guided by questions.

Who can attend? Everyone who is interested in statistics, have questions about statistics. Find out how Duke environment can help you to incorporate statistics into youyr research.. You can know a very little in statistics or you can already apply it in your daily research. Invited faculty experts apply statistics in variety of disciplines involving problems in environment, medical sciences, engineering, computer sciences and social sciences.

-Free food and refreshments will be provided at the event

Graduate Students Research Seminar- "Analog Circuit Design for Active Microcantilever Signal Amplification" (Abstract) This week the MEMS Department and CIERD invites ALL Pratt graduate students to attend the weekly MEMS graduate student seminar series. Christian Harris, a doctoral student in MEMS will be discussing his research dealing with microcantilever arrays and their engineering and biological applications.

  • When: Thur., April. 14th, 12:00 PM
  • Where: Teer Building 203

LUNCH will be provided. Please contact us if you have any questions.

It is very easy! Submit abstract online and share you research with others: Online abstract submission
