Series of Grant Writing Workshops for Students in Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences.

This series of grant writing workshops is designed for graduate students in all disciplines and those who cross disciplinary boundaries. Discuss your ideas with faculty and other students while learning from practical experience and case studies. You may participate in all of the workshops or in ones that specifically apply to you. You may choose to write a grant and get feedback from faculty from a variety of departments or not. It is all designed to meet your needs. Please join us and learn more about getting money for your favorite research idea. Read the more detailed outline.

Researching Grant Opportunities

During this workshop you will learn how to find teammates who can help to develop your idea for a grant proposal how to present your idea to the group, and how to seek out support for this idea. The r ole of collaboration in writing grants related to interdisciplinary topics will be discussed.

Workshop IV: Grant Proposal Funding

Develop skills needed to identify potential funding sources for planned research activities and determine boundaries of eligibility related to specific kinds of grant support. Take this opportunity to learn how to search for funding using Duke's subscription databases. This workshop will be conducted by the ORS coordinator. Examples of funded projects in natural sciences and social sciences will be presented.

Workshop V: How to Write an Abstract for a Grant.

A faculty member will explain the general structure of a grant proposal. Basic elements of grant writing which are transferable to a variety of grant application will then be introduced. The faculty member will present successful and unsuccessful grant proposal abstracts. You will work on identifying strong and weak elements of the presented abstracts. Also you will learn techniques to enhance your grant abstract. Faculty members will be available to provide feedback on specific proposal ideas.

Workshop VI: The Next Step: Writing the Main Part of the Grant Proposal and Narratives

Grant proposal idea implementation usually serves as the bulk part of a grant. This workshop will discuss idea implementation and introduce writing of a narrative. You will learn how to write specific aims, background, methods, materials, approach and timeline. If you are writing your own grant proposal, a faculty member will help you to compile an outline for your idea implementation.

Workshop VII: Grant Proposal Budget and Cover Letters

This workshop will cover a budget and cover letters of a grant proposal. The budgets of two different grant proposals will be considered as case studies. Distinctions between selected budgets and a link between a budget and a bulk part of a proposal will also be addressed. C over letters for research grants will be presented by an expert from the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations . Discussion of both budget and cover letters will be based on those case studies. Also you will get suggestions on how to structure your grant proposals when the sponsor doesn't have a strict format to follow. Those students who are working on writing their own grant proposal will get feedback from a faculty member on the list of costs for their budget.

Workshop VIII: An Intensive Grant Writing Workshop

If you are writing your grant proposal, this workshop is created to improve it. You will have a chance to r efine your cover letters and budgets and polish the bulk part of your proposal. Participants in this workshop will peer reviews each of the other's grant proposals and will get feedback from faculty members. Finally, students' grant proposals will be submitted to the faculty reviewers. Several faculty members will be invited and each faculty member will work with a small group of students.
