The CIERD forum is an internet based arena where ideas can be exchanged and discussions can take place on variuos scientific topics. The forum establishes a medium by which users can actively communicate with each other across a wide variety of disciplines in a virtual environment. The principle behind the forum is simple: One posts a question and then waits for a reply. Participants periodically check the forum to see if any new topics have been posted that they could respond to. The topics can range from very general in nature to specific. An example of a general question would be: "Who do I talk to to find out if Duke has an Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) that I could use?". šThe answer might be: "You can contact the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMIF) to find out how to access their SEM." If someone has vast knowledge in a specific topic, their answer might be longer and more specific. Another person might know of a reference to a journal article or a website to point the person in the right direction. The forum exists to unite scientists, engineers, and doctors of all disciplines in one arena where users can ask and answer scientific questions while building a network of people with similar research interests, but differing technical backgrounds.
