A. PURPOSE OF THE CHAIR

The Chair will play a central role in CIERD, acting as the public face of the organization, providing leadership and direction to the members and working towards the growth of the organization through new projects and initiatives.

The CIERD Chair will require excellent communication skills, to allow them to develop and maintain strong relationships with university administration, CIERD sponsors external to the university and CIERD members. The Chair will interact with different groups of students, both internally (CIERD Vice chairs and project leaders) and externally (administration and interested students). The CIERD Chair will take the central role in converting the center's aims into tangible model of student driven interdisciplinary collaboration that can be applied at Duke and in other universities

 

B. ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fundraising through interfacing with Duke administration and outside sponsors
  • Building relationships with Duke administration
  • Communicating CIERD's aims to the larger Duke community
  • Set clear strategies and goals for the organization.
  • Communicate effectively with CIERD team and university administration
  • Facilitate internal communication and CIERD projects
  • Assist and support CIERD vice-chairs and project leaders
  • Provide motivation for the CIERD Team and resolve conflict when need arises
  • Set group priorities and help to define future directions
  • Develop understanding of key challenges in education and research of Duke Univ. students
  • Determine agenda for Executive and General Meetings w/ VP

 

C. QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE PROFILE

  • High degree of self-motivation and determination
  • Strong leadership acumen
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English
  • Prior experience in project management or leadership positions is preferable
  • Demonstrated teamwork and communications skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Capaity to manage change in a positive way
  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on CIERD long term vision and short-term goals
  • Produce clear conclusions and recommendations
  • Good implementation skills
